Picture No. 20_b One begins to build a home. Here life begins anew on the banks of Ki-Chi-Saga. Kristina seems to be alone with her thoughts yearning for home but Karl Oskar notices this. He shows her Anna's shoes. They remind him of why they left Sweden.

It is Christmas. Karl Oskar and the children surprise Kristina with a cast iron stove - Queen of the Prairie. The guests arrive to celebrate the holiday, but the party concludes with an argument between Karl Oskar and the fur trapper Nöjd. Nöjd claims that this land is stolen from the Indians. Picture No. 22

Picture No. 23 Robert returns from the gold fields. He is alone and his spirit is broken. He tells Kristina about losing Arvid and that he finally is reconciled about his fate. The money he gives to Karl Oskar turns out to be false. Karl Oskar becomes infuriated and Robert is anguished and wanders off. He is sick and dies beside a stream.

Ulrika has had many proposals of marriage. She tells Kristina that she has at last decided to marry Pastor Jackson. She will be christened and become a Baptist. Kristina has a miscarriage and the doctor says that she can never again become pregnant. If she does it would cause her death. Picture No. 24

Picture No. 26 For the first time in her life Kristina doubts the existence of God. He has taken away her child and taken her man from her, too. She feels like a stranger in the new country. But she overcomes her doubts and decides to place her life in God's hands and soon she is with child again. Karl Oskar feels great guilt. Kristina tries to comfort him and says that he has done nothing wrong.

On Sunday August 17, 1862 the young state of Minnesota got its own civil war. The Great Sioux Uprising began. These were a people who suffered through hunger for far too long a time. And…Kristina is once again a devout woman. She prays to God for help to relieve Karl Oskar of his apprehension.

Picture No. 29 Kristina received a few seeds from the Astrakhan apple tree of her beloved Duvemåla. She has planted her own apple tree in the new country. After three summers the tree blooms but the frost takes away the blossoms. In the fourth year the apples ripen - then Kristina's life is fulfilled.
