THE ABBA TOP 40: How the songs were ranked
Between 1972 and 1982, ABBA recorded eight studio albums and over 100 tracks in English and four other languages. More than 40 per cent of those tracks went on to chart in at least one country and a remarkable 21 songs reached number one.
According to Universal Music, ABBA has to date sold more than 375 million recordings, making them the best-selling band in history after only the Beatles.This level of success is a rare achievement for any performer and ABBA was the first to accomplish it from outside the US/UK music mainstream, setting the stage for their March 2010 induction into the Roll and Roll Hall of Fame.
This montage ranks ABBA's top forty chart singles. The clips are excerpted from produced video (ABBA was a pioneer of the music video), live performances, and lip-synched TV appearances: As a result the quality of the video varies.
The ranking is determined by reverse scoring ABBAs original single releases from the pop and rock charts in 17 countries on five continents between 1972 and 1983. (100 points were assigned for a number one chart position, 99 points for number two and so on, with a bonus 20 points awarded for each number one.)
